As you all may know, last Friday my brother was admitted to hospital for kidney failure. After nearly a week of fuckwit doctors and bitchy nurses we finally have a definitive answer regarding J's kidney function. On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 = healthy kidney function; 4 = dialysis; 5 = kidney transplant) on Monday, J's function was 3.5  He was told if his functions remained at that level for at least 1 day, he could go home... follow up with kidney specialist, etc. Today he was told his kidney function is 4.5 and he qualifies for the donor list. How the hell does the function get that progressively worse in less that 48 hours? Even before J's function was given a number, I told him that if it came down to it, and I was a match, he could have one of my kidneys. (We already know that we have the same blood type, so that is a positive step, right?) When I spoke to J today after he got the 'transplant' news, he said that even if he was approved for a transplant he would probably say 'no' to it. How do you respond to a statement like that, and what do you say to someone who seems to have completely given up before he has even begun to fight for a chance to live?

I'm so confused and scared right now. I certainly don't want to lose my brother.

Oh damn. I wish I could do something more concrete to help, but I will be sending good thoughts and positive wishes your way (and your brother's).
